The public courts are at 2701 Hill Avenue on the southeast corner of the high school grounds. Four dedicated outdoor hard courts have permanent lines and nets, restrooms, and free access from dawn to dusk. They are the best in-town choice for a casual outdoor game without a membership.

Bedell Family YMCA

The Bedell Family YMCA at 1900 41st Street reserves its wood gym for open pickleball Monday through Friday from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. The indoor courts have permanent lines and portable nets. Members play through their YMCA access, and nonmembers can use a day pass.

Nearby outdoor options

Sawmill Park at 314 Rohr Street in Arnolds Park has four free dedicated courts with permanent nets, open daily from dawn to dusk. Speier Park at 1507 Sanborn Avenue in Okoboji also has four outdoor concrete courts, permanent nets, restrooms, and wheelchair access. Both are strong alternatives when the Spirit Lake courts are full.

Lessons and beginner help

The YMCA's weekday open play is the easiest place for a beginner to meet regular players indoors. The morning and midday blocks provide two chances each weekday, and the YMCA's ForeverWell program includes pickleball among its activities. Solo players and bad weather days are better handled at the Bedell YMCA. Buy a day pass and arrive during one of the two weekday open play blocks. Summer visitors should expect more demand around the lakes, so the midday YMCA session or an early outdoor start can be the smoother choice.
